Garage pop outfit the Cyrkle made out pretty well for what was originally the Rhondells, a frat rock band formed as a lark in 1961 by Pennsylvania college students Tom Dawes and Don Danneman. After supposedly being given its new name by John Lennon and Brian Epstein the Cyrkle signed with Columbia and recorded the Paul Simon-penned "Red Rubber Ball," which bounced all the way to #2 in 1966. ... more
